An eye for an eye.

They are battered women, grieving parents, and burglarized homeowners who responded to criminal violence by taking the law into their own hands. Their cases have struck a deep chord in American society. Are they victims of a failing judicial system or criminals themselves? True crime writer Gary Provost examines the stories of ordinary citizens who have taken on the roles of judge, jury and - sometimes - executioner. Are their acts a higher form of justice...or merely revenge? You decide

  • Bernhard Goetz, who shot four teenagers when they approached him on a subway train and demanded money
  • The young man who gunned down his own friend for killing his teenaged sister in a drunk-driving accident
  • The mother who risked her life to track down and apprehend her daughter's rapist
  • "Grambo", the Dallas grandmother who held a burglar at gunpoint for 45 minutes while waiting for the police
  • The battered wife who hired a hit man to murder her husband after 17 years of abuse

Fascinating, penetrating, and chilling, Into Their Own Hands is a controversial and thought-provoking look at what's wrong with crime and punishment in America today and what happens when victims don't just get mad - they get even.

Into Their Own Hands Shocking True Stories of Citizens Who Took the Law into Their Own Hands (Audible Audio Edition) Gary Provost Arthur Flavell Crossroad Press Books

This book is heavy on commentary and relatively light on “true stories,” most of which are quite brief. It’s thought provoking, but I feel like I got a bait and switch.

An interesting collection of true-life examples of vigilante justice. It's always refreshing to read a true crime book that isn't about serial killers or fatal love interests, and the questions these stories raise about the morality and social implications of taking the law into your own hands makes it an engaging and thought-provoking read.
Very comfortable just a little difficult to put on Orr I should say tighten enough by yourself seeing the strap comes off..
This book is ok., that doesn't mean it is not worth buying and then reading from cover to cover, it just means it would not be my first choice of reading material. I enjoy reading a great true crime book and this one unfortunately doesn't quite make that standard.
I bit dry and plodding, but some interesting facts.
Fairly good book about people who take revenge for a crime or try to help victims of a crime. It has some interesting stories, and the author tries to make the point that vigilantism is not usually a good idea.
This book is heavy on commentary and relatively light on “true stories,” most of which are quite brief. It’s thought provoking, but I feel like I got a bait and switch.
